Rubens Belfort Jr. MD, PhD, MBA
Federal University of Sao PauloHead professor of ophthalmology at the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, and president of the Vision Institute.
Member of the National Academy of Medicine, Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Past president of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology, as well as past chair of the Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation. He was director of communications for the International Council of Ophthalmology and president of the 2006 World Ophthalmology Congress in São Paulo.
Past editor of the Brazilian Archives of Ophthalmology, he has concluded the tutorship of more than 80 postgraduate students and has more than 500 published papers which received 14,934 citations resulting in a Google H index of 62 (July 2018). His research activities are held in different parts of Brazil with emphasis in the Amazon, including the fields of inflammation (such as Toxoplasmosis, AIDS, Zyka) and geriatric ocular diseases.
Presented lectures include the Jackson Memorial, Duke Elder Oration, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, Mourad Khalil, Gradle, Moacyr Alvaro, and Robert Nussenblatt.
Dr. Belfort has received among others the Brazilian Medal of Scientific Merit, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Life Achievement Award, the O’Connor Schlaegel Gold Medal, the Pan-American Medal, the Gradle Medal, the Società Oftalmologica Italiana Honorary Award, and the Conrado Wessell Award.
