Consultant Ophthalmologist/NHR Clinician Scientist, Moorfields Eye Hospital/Institute of Ophthalmology University College
Mr Keane is an NIHR Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London Institute of Ophthalmology. He studied medicine at University College Dublin, Ireland, and his ophthalmology training included a Clinical Research Fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute in the U.S.A.
He has received numerous awards, including, in January 2015, a prestigious “Clinician Scientist” award from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in the UK – the first ophthalmologist in the UK to receive such an award. His remit from this award is to explore the potential of new medical technologies and innovation in ophthalmology, ranging from advanced imaging to artificial intelligence to virtual and augmented realities.
He has published close to 100 peer-reviewed articles and more than 10 book chapters. He acts as a reviewer for a wide range of international ophthalmology journals and is regularly invited to speak at international meetings. In April 2015, he was ranked no. 4 on a worldwide ranking of ophthalmologists under 40, published in “the Ophthalmologist” journal (https://theophthalmologist.com/the-power-list-2015/).
